What you will be working on in this chapter is reconnecting with your real self, your inner child. The inner child is used as a metaphor for feelings because it is an innocent and tangible image and it makes it easier for you to communicate with yourself. If is hard to be harmful to yourself when you visualize yourself as a young child! Forming a deep inner relationship with yourself allows you to have honest reactions in the moment, or in real time, as I call it, making way for your needs to be met without resorting to back door strategies.
As your reconnect with yourself your may find times that are not comfortable. For example, it will not be a familiar place for you to be there for yourself; you will not know who you are in relation to something you have never experienced before. This is the first place people fall out in the emotional healing process. People believe that if something is good for you it will instantaneously make you feel better. Going somewhere you have never been before, especially emotionally, can create feelings of uncertainty and insecurity. If you have no strategies in an unfamiliar emotional place it can feel a bit intimidating. If you understand logically what you are going through, you will be able to stay with the process and move through the fear. You will learn who you are in that new emotional place and practice until yo become comfortable.
As you work with your inner child you will become quite adept at spending time with your inner child. As this increases, you will notice a strong relationship forming between the two of you. The stronger the relationship, the more calm and centered you will feel. Strong feelings of security will replace insecurity. You will feel much more in control of your emotions because you will be in tune with what you need as you need it.
