Healing Loss From the Past

Facing the Past

Loss is the main issue in emotional healing; Loss of self, loss of confidence, loss of self-respect, loss of self-esteem, loss of self-acceptance, loss of hope, loss of faith, loss of security, loss of connection, loss of dignity. Many believe it is best to leave the past behind and simply move forward. That sounds real good on paper, but the past influences us every day. If our past was supportive, loving, balanced and health, it would actually be great advice. But the fact is, most of us have some unresolved issues from the past - parts of ourselves stuck in the past - not tomentions strategies we still use that are based on perceptions from the past. During my darkest hours I tried to "happy think" my depression away. It simply wasn't that simple.

You do not have to have a tragic incident in you past to need emotional healing. Many of us have been physically beaten, molested or otherwise severely emotionally abused, but many of us just grew up disregarded. Once again, remember that perception is everything. If your parents both worked and you were constantly with a baby sitter, chances are you felt a bit abandoned. Thoughts and decisions about your self-worth would be formed by this experience, which could lead to feelings of negative expectations and insufficiency.

Trust yourself during this phase of your emotional healing. Whatever is important to confront will come up as you move through the exercises. Remember to line up a therapist to work with should your emotions become too uncomfortable.
